KTS - Kiwi Tamil Samoogan's annual chess event a success!

New Zealand based Kiwi-Tamil showcases and protects Tamil culture through cultural events, language classes, and festive celebrations with a focus on passing values to younger generations.

Chess is a highly popular activity among both young generations and seasoned players.

The annual KTS Chess Tournament 2025 occurred on Saturday, with high participation from young players and adults competing for recognition, dedicated to enhancing their chess skills and attaining success.

At the Glenfield chess event, Kiwi-Tamil juniors support the monthly Chessroad Tournament. This weekend, WCM Eva Lourenco had the unique opportunity to attend the KTS annual chess event at Papakura as a guest speaker with the invitation from the organisers and alongside the councillor Daniel Newman and Jin Yang, Active Asia Connector.  The welcoming reception by the community, organizers and sponsors is truly memorable.

Being a guest with the KTS community provided insight into community goals for encouraging generations. I had the opportunity to speak with some players and organizers prior to the games, who shared insights about the chess event held for the second consecutive year due to past success.

Attending the event as a guest reminded me that chess is far more than a game; it’s a language, a culture, and a shared pursuit of mastery bringing people together. Whether you’re an active player or a curious outsider, there’s something profoundly inspiring about being part of a community so devoted to growth and excellence.

Also, If you ever get the chance to attend a live chess event  — I highly recommend it. You’ll leave not only entertained but challenged to sharpen your own thinking, in chess and in life.
