FAQ for Chess Tournaments

 

 

How can Chess benefit my child?

Chess is a tool for critical thinking, decision making, perseverance, and discipline. It's a powerful educational tool. Schools and parents introduce chess to children to develop cognitive processes. Chess is suitable for all ages. It stimulates and challenges mind, body, and soul.

 

 

What is the benefit of participating in the tournament?

Tournament can be conducted over the board or online. Over the board events help players enhance their skills and confidence in diverse environments. Tournaments provide a chance to observe others, expanding chess knowledge and soft skills. Play, Learn, Grow! Online tournaments are valuable for practice and regular play, but cannot replace the experience of over the board.

 

Is the Chessroad tournament held Monthly?

Chessroad Tournament is held monthly with confirmed dates as displayed in the Tournament Registration webpage.


Is the Chessroad tournament rated?

Internal provisional rating is provided to the players based on NZCF rating.

 

Can the players win multiple prizes?

Only one prize per player is allowed to ensure all participants have a fair chance to win. Buchholz method will determine tiebreakers. Lucky dip prizes are available to everyone, no restrictions apply.

 

Do you need minimum rating to play in this tournament?

No minimum rating needed and accessible to all Junior & Adult players, rated or unrated.

What is the time control?

The format of the tournament is 5 rounds with a time control of 10mins + 5 sec increment for each move.

Is there an age limit for Juniors and Adults?

There is no age limit, the event is open to all chess players. We have 3 categories effective from July 2025, Under 8 years, Under 20 years, Over 20 years for the purpose of prize distribution. Limited seats are available for players in the over 20 age category 

What is the purpose of Adult category players?

To offer Juniors the chance to engage with varying levels of chess skills, an adult category has been introduced. Inquiries from parents and adult players seeking participation are periodically received. Guardians of Juniors should think about participating to support players.

How to add a Player Name & Year of Birth in the Registration Page online.

Refer to the screenshot here, add the details in the Checkout page notes field as below. Player name & YOB example "Joe Bloggs, YOB 2010"

 

Is there free parking at the venue?

Limited parking is available at the venue. Drop off available including off-street parking near by.

 

If I am running late can I get a bye?

A zero point bye will be allocated in absence of the player. 

 

Do you have prize money?

Winners receive prize money. Medals are offered to the Under 8 age category and players have the opportunity to win the cash prizes.   As Medals and Trophies serve as lasting reminders of achievement we  offer medals in the Under 8 age category only. Cash prizes in the adult category require players to be over 20 years of age.

Do you provide participant certificate to the players?

Digital Participant Certificate is available on request only. Please let us know and we will email a personalised digital certificate.

Why there is a prize for best girl and not for best boy?

As we have a low number of girls playing chess, we want to encourage more girls to play chess. To further promote gender diversity in chess, we are offering special prizes for girls participants. Additionally, age-specific prizes are available for young players under 8 years old.

 

How many illegal moves are allowed?

The Chessroad Tournament permits 3 illegal moves before forfeit.

 

What time should I reach the tournament?

The players meeting is at the beginning of the match and its important to arrive 15minutes before start so as to avoid forfeiting the game in absence. Text 021 125 5100 to inform any delay.

Are parents/visitors allowed?

Players parents are allowed as well as the visitors to observe the games. Please do not gather around the players during the game play to avoid distraction.  Parents have the opportunity to participate in the July event and beyond.

 

Is food allowed on premises?

Light snacks or finger food maybe be consumed. Please ensure to clear the rubbish or use any of the available rubbish bins onsite. 

 

Tournament Photos?

Tournament photographs captured of the winners or of the players are published on our website to provide information of the tournament. 

 

What is EOYP 2025?

EOYP signifies End of Year Performance of the players participated in the monthly Chessroad Tournament. Rankings and points determine the top 3 players annually. Find details on the EOYP page in the menu bar.

 

Do you provide chess coaching?

Chess coaching is provided and information is available on the website. Please contact online or text 021 125 5100. Chess Holiday program is conducted from time to time.
