Juniors in action!
With the help of some strong minded people around me, we all managed to pick up the work that goes behind the scene in organising our first Chess tournament.
On a sunny Saturday afternoon in the bustling suburb of Glenfield, Auckland we all gathered in the 'Mission Hall' . This particular venue is not very visible to the naked eye as it is surrounded by the Mall on one side, the library on the other side and McDonalds and other eateries across the road. But in this oasis of silence surrounded by the many distractions of Glenfield, and with their parents watching on, we had junior players all fighting it out around shiny chess boards.
The chess started promptly at 2.35 pm and the junior players of all ages and abilities fought it out with some terrific and mediocre moves, all done with the intent of hunting the King. It was a joy to see some smiling faces as well as some sighs with near misses as their best moves ended up with checkmates given or being received. But as we all know chess is as it is in life, and our best ideas can either land us with success or failures, many times just as the dice falls.
With smiles of the young juniors still fresh in our mind, we will do this again next month.
