FIFA World Cup 2026: Ronaldo Takes the Field with Mixed Emotions Against DR Congo
|
Our thoughts
Portugal had a frustrating start to their FIFA World Cup campaign, being held to a 1–1 draw by DR Congo in their opening Group K match.
Fans were left disappointed as Cristiano Ronaldo was unable to find the back of the net, with one of Portugal’s best chances striking the goalpost. Portugal took the lead through João Neves, who calmly finished to put his side ahead and seemingly on course for victory.
However, DR Congo fought back and made history when Yoane Wissa scored a memorable equaliser, earning his nation a valuable point and ensuring the spoils were shared.

While it was not the result Portugal had hoped for, there were still positives to take from the performance. Ronaldo and his teammates will now turn their attention to the upcoming matches as they look to progress through the group stage and advance to the knockout rounds.
We wish Ronaldo and the Portugal squad every success in the remainder of the tournament.

As we strive to maintain a balance between soccer and chess, one of our goals in the coming days or months is to connect with, follow, or learn more about a Portuguese chess player from afar. We look forward to exploring Portugal’s rich chess culture while continuing to support the national football team on the world stage.

On a personal front, alongside my passion for chess, football continues to be a major interest, particularly during the FIFA World Cup, a passion that has been nurtured through my family.
