FIFA World Cup 2026: A Perfect Storm in a Cup as Ghana Stuns Panama with Last-Minute Winner
|
Our thoughts..
It was a perfect storm in a cup when Ghana snatched a dramatic last-minute goal against Panama in their opening FIFA World Cup match, securing a 1–0 victory.
Despite Panama controlling possession for much of the game and appearing to dictate the tempo, the match ended in stunning fashion as Ghana claimed a historic win. Caleb Yirenky surprised everyone on and off the field with the decisive goal, delivering a result few saw coming.

The victory gives Ghana plenty to celebrate as they collect three valuable points and build momentum ahead of their upcoming group-stage matches. Panama, meanwhile, will be left wondering how a game they largely controlled slipped away in the closing moments.
As we strive to maintain a balance between soccer and chess, one of our goals in the coming days or months is to connect with, follow, or learn more about a Ghana chess player from afar. We look forward to exploring Ghana's rich chess culture while continuing to support the national football team on the world stage.

On a personal front, alongside my passion for chess, football continues to be a major interest, particularly during the FIFA World Cup, a passion that has been nurtured through my family.
