Our thoughts...
Day 2 of the knockout stage at the FIFA World Cup 2026 saw France, Norway, and Mexico book their places in the Round of 16 with victories secured in regular time.
Norway faced a determined challenge from Côte d'Ivoire, who battled back to level the contest. However, Norway maintained their advantage, winning 2–1 on the day. A dramatic late goal from Erling Haaland sealed the victory and ended Côte d'Ivoire's World Cup campaign.

France delivered another impressive performance despite their opponents enjoying more possession. Kylian Mbappé starred with a brilliant brace, while Bradley Barcola added a third goal to complete a convincing 3–0 victory. Sweden produced a spirited display but were unable to find the back of the net as France comfortably progressed to the next round.

Mexico also secured their place in the Round of 16 with a composed performance against Ecuador. Two first-half goals put Mexico firmly in control, leaving Ecuador with too much to do after the break. Julián Quiñones opened the scoring before Raúl Jiménez doubled the lead, ensuring a well-deserved victory and progression to the last 16.
Today's chess spotlight is on José Martínez of Mexico, a player renowned for his exceptional speed in fast time-control events and his exciting tactical approach to the game. His performances, including his memorable run at the FIDE Chess World Cup in Goa, have earned him a growing fan base around the world.
Martínez is admired for his sharp, attacking style, often creating dynamic positions that keep spectators on the edge of their seats.
One of his recent standout encounters came against Argentina's rising star Faustino Oro. The match was a thrilling battle for first place, with both players demonstrating exceptional speed and precision. Oro's quick decision-making and accurate play ultimately forced Martínez to concede, leaving the Mexican grandmaster to finish in second place.
For fans of rapid and blitz chess, both players offers valuable lessons in time management, tactical awareness, and maintaining composure under intense pressure.
On a personal front, alongside my passion for chess, football continues to be a major interest, particularly during the FIFA World Cup, a passion that has been nurtured through my family.
