KTS Annual Chess Event Celebrates Community, Learning and Competition!

The third annual KTS Chess Event (Kiwi Tamil Samoogan) once again brought together players of all ages and playing strengths, creating a fantastic atmosphere of competition, learning and community spirit. Players competed across age categories, each demonstrating determination, creativity and tactical skill in their quest to checkmate the King. The players in each category competed in knockout format for awards in the form of trophies and cash prizes.

It was a privilege to return as a guest for this year's event and have the opportunity to inspire the players before the first moves were made in areas of time management, maintaining a positive mindset through both victories and defeats, and developing resilience as a chess player. Players were also challenged with questions about the upcoming Open and Women's World Chess Championships, and it was impressive to see the juniors confident answers. Their enthusiasm and knowledge reflect the hard work they are putting into developing both their chess understanding and their passion for the game.

Every chess player experiences losses, but each game presents an opportunity to learn, analyse mistakes and return stronger. It was particularly encouraging to watch several young female players display excellent over-the-board skills, demonstrating confidence, ideas and a strong competitive spirit throughout the tournament.

The event was also honoured by the presence of several distinguished guests, including Papakura Councillor Daniel Newman, National Party Candidate, Emma Chatterton and Brent Catchpole, Deputy Chair of Papakura Local Board, where they highlighted the positive impact chess continues to have within the community.

A heartfelt thank you goes to the KTS organisers and committee members for delivering another outstanding event. Their dedication not only provides a wonderful competitive experience but also helps young people develop resilience, critical thinking, sportsmanship and the confidence to pursue their goals both on and off the chessboard.

Finally, my sincere gratitude goes to the coordinators, volunteers, parents and everyone working behind the scenes. Their commitment and teamwork made this year's KTS Chess Event a memorable and rewarding experience for everyone.
