FIDE World Championship - A tie is beneficial in Game 9 for Gukesh and Ding

Day 9 and Game 9 of FIDE World Championship 2024

A tie is beneficial in Game 9 for Gukesh and Ding.

The spectators were anticipating an engaging clash in Game 9 with Gukesh taking the lead with the white pieces. His strategic use of the Catalan Opening, starting with the queen pawn move d4, followed by c4 and a Bishop fianchetto, set the tone for an intriguing match.

Ding kept the position solid with both the Bishops on the 7 rank after a quick check on the White King, only to retrieve the Bishop back for long term play. This strategic move by Ding showcased his adept understanding of the game and his ability to plan for the long term.

Both players demonstrated exceptional strategic thinking by carefully maneuvering all their minor and major pieces on the board without conceding any advantage to the opponent.

With the 27th move, Queens removed, Rook and Knight vs Rook and Bishop in endgame with the King side pawns. No clear winning chance resulted in a draw. Players continued until all pieces removed and the Kings left on the board. Score: 1/2-1/2, 4.5 points each.

The players get a well deserved rest for today to catch up on game 10 on Saturday 7 December.  We will see Ding with the White pieces when they return to play on Saturday.

With 5 games left in the World Championship title race, the winner is still undetermined.
